Rebuilding a Rebuild
March 2nd, 2009There have been several times I have build something, after having been disassembled my myself mostly, and I have parts left over. Lets see, twice today I have had that happen.
The upside is that you know what the part looks like. So, you don’t have to rebuild a transmission if you have a extra piston in your hand.
Harder yet, is when you have not left over parts and it does not work. Then you have to make sure everything was put together correctly. Did I build it right?
But, the MOST HARD is when there is a part missing, but you don’t know what part or where it goes, or even that there is a missing part. Where do you start.
I had a program giving my serious brain cramps this morning. Turns out I was missing a “return” statement which ends a program function. In turn, the program would execute the open ended function and then execute the next function which undid the first open ended function……
Sorry, in other words, it is hardest to find the stupidest mistakes.
White Male XP Laptop, DOA
February 18th, 2009Thanks for the encouragement. I jumped and killed my Vista Install (after backing up)
Well, HP provides NO drivers for my laptop for XP, just Vista (32 and 64). SO I ended up finding the Nvidia drivers needed for my Video and Chipset. The sound, wifi, webcam, bluetooth, HDMI, were all dead. Hmmmmm. I need to try to round up some XP drivers for all my hardware. Talk about pain in the neck.
So I re-ghosted my harddrive back to vista. Then it would not boot (some error with a file) so I ended up running the restore. No did Vista know it had been ghosted? Weird, the harddrive should have been exact bit for bit.
In conclusion, drivers are the issue here, but the lack of drivers is for XP. I think I’d still prefer XP, but Vista will have to work for now. Maybe I need to just run MS Dos 6.22
New Laptop Good, Vista Bad?
February 17th, 2009Okay, my older laptop is officially on my hate list as of Friday last week. Saturday I picked up a new HP Laptop from Sams Club. (AMD 64bit Dual 2.1ghz, 3Gb Ram, Nvidia)
Here is my conflict. It has Vista Home Premium (32 Bit). It seems slow (my pref rating is 3.9 due to graphics and would be 4.8ish) I also don’t like how Vista does things. I prefer the older file/program structure. I also am having issues with running my old programs.
MY POINT: Unless someone intervenes by Wednesday, vista is getting the axe and XP Pro is taking it’s place. Anybody disagree with a “Capitol F-Disk?”
Someone better talk me off this ledge……..
Laptop with Alzheimer’s
February 3rd, 2009My trusty Dell Latitude 110L Laptop, which I purchase used, is having Alzheimer’s. If I have the “necessary” 1GB of ram stick in it, beyond the on board 256Mb it will semi-randomly blue screen. There is some little connection in there that is flaky. I already took it apart once to look for something more obvious.
Well, it is still in (wait wait wait …. this is sooo slow) use by Em. She has been typing the next great American novel. I think she is near 50 pages, wow!
I am hoping to purchase a new HP 17″ Lappy in the very near future. Ya know, do my part to ’stimulate’ the economy (There is a rant I won’t take. Maybe I will…) Since when is deficit spending and consumption the quintessential American patriotism? I digress…. I still want to do my part if it means I can get a computer in my lap again.
